{"id":1505,"date":"2024-02-15T16:18:09","date_gmt":"2024-02-15T16:18:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lewisandclarkboathouse.org\/?p=1505"},"modified":"2024-02-15T16:18:09","modified_gmt":"2024-02-15T16:18:09","slug":"annual-report-to-the-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lewisclarkmuseum.org\/?p=1505","title":{"rendered":"Annual Report to the Community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>2023 marked the 20th Anniversary of the Boat House and Museum.\u00a0 We continue to see momentum as we build for the future.\u00a0 Here\u2019s a roundup of our 2023 and preview of 2024!<\/span><span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Record-setting paid attendance<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Internships with docents<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Visits from VIPs<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Completion of a new classroom<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Major building enhancements<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Stellar reviews online<\/span><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Connecting Lewis &amp; Clark to the Community<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span>We welcomed 25,670 museum visitors last year, from all 50 states and more than 40 countries, from tiny Andorra to distant Mongolia.\u00a0 We\u2019re at the center of community celebrations, such as the Festival of the Little Hills and our 20th Anniversary Celebration, the destination for hundreds of paddlers in the MR-340, a regular partner with the St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau and destination for school groups, senior centers, and tour groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Bringing History to Life<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span>Thanks to a grant from Americana Corner, we hired three part-time docents to interpret the history of St. Charles and the Expedition.\u00a0 Leah (Grinnell College), Christian (University of Missouri Graduate Student), and Megan (George Washington University grad), used displays from the Corps of Engineers and other items to share history with our visitors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In May, we were delighted to take the Keelboat out on the Mighty Mississippi for crew training and equipment check out.\u00a0 The sight of the Keelboat underway was stirring and a wonderful milestone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Gift Shop Goodness<\/b><span><br \/>\n<\/span><span>Record-setting gift shop sales were a testament to new seasonal items such as custom Christmas ornaments and hoodies, locally sourced items such as stunning geodes and history books, and a remarkable assortment of educational and National Park-themed items.\u00a0 We hear often that people consider the gift shop a destination on its own!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>New-found Newfoundland and Historic Boats<\/b><span><br \/>\n<\/span><span>Inspired by donated prints from John Fisher, we created a display about Seaman: Lewis\u2019 (other) remarkable companion.\u00a0 We added a second dugout canoe \u2013 originally from the Pacific Northwest \u2013 to round out our exhibits of watercraft.\u00a0 Our displays are funded thanks to a grant from the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation from the Lewis &amp;\u00a0<\/span><span>Clark Trail Stewardship Endowment: A National Council of the Lewis &amp; Clark Expedition Bicentennial Legacy Project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Home Sweet Home<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span>We love our riverside location, but as early explorers knew well, the elements can be brutal.\u00a0 We battened down the hatches with window sealing, roof repairs, upgrading to energy-efficient lighting and most significantly, the creation of a new classroom thanks to the Lotsie &amp; Rick Holton family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Testimonials Galore<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span>The Mayor of St. Charles proclaimed our 20th Anniversary July 1, 2023 as Lewis &amp; Clark Boat House and Museum day, recognizing the museum as \u201ca most welcome presence as a landmark on our historic waterfront.\u201d But his remarks weren\u2019t the only kudos.\u00a0 In November, we were named a \u201cTravelers Choice\u201d destination by Trip Advisor and in December, we earned honors from Yelp for being highly reviewed by visitors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Help Us (Literally!)
